The Penske PC-23 epitomised Indycar in the 1990's. Sleek, fast and beautiful it dominated in its two guises, first with the quad-cam Ilmor Indy V8 engine and then fitted with "the atom bomb of Motor racing", the Mercedes-Benz 500I. Chassis 08 was one of Emerson Fittipaldi's two cars during the later half of the 1994 season before becoming the primary test car during the winter. In early 1995 it was sold to the Bettenhausen team where it was raced by Stefan Johansson. That part of it's history is still being researched as Bettenhausen also bought chassis 09.
The turbo and other items of the boost system are now mocked up on the Ilmor 265D engine.
The PC-23 has 2 water coolers that in turn use the engine water to cool both the gearbox and engine oil. The system is now mocked up such that the exhaust heat shielding can be produced.
The engine is now going onto the chassis as a mockup for the heat shielding. Nice that it all fits.... so far.
The tub has now arrived back in the workshop fresh from being reconditioned by MCT. The flanks which were previously very scuffed are now looking pristine and the general cockpit area is much tidier. Luckily very fue structural repairs were required. The car will now be part built up as a mockup for the exhaust header bags.
We are proposing to use the original side pods however they will require extensive re-work including re-skinning both A and B surfaces.
The headers have now been re-conditioned. These fit the Ilmor 265D quad-cam engine run though the majority of the 1994 Indycar season.
The Penske chassis is now finally free of paint and will be going for some minor repair work shortly. After that it will be mocked up with the engine and gearbox to produce the exhaust system heat shielding. It's worth noting the the nose cover now fits perfectly and is much lighter.
