The Penske PC-23 epitomised Indycar in the 1990's. Sleek, fast and beautiful it dominated in its two guises, first with the quad-cam Ilmor Indy V8 engine and then fitted with "the atom bomb of Motor racing", the Mercedes-Benz 500I. Chassis 08 was one of Emerson Fittipaldi's two cars during the later half of the 1994 season before becoming the primary test car during the winter. In early 1995 it was sold to the Bettenhausen team where it was raced by Stefan Johansson. That part of it's history is still being researched as Bettenhausen also bought chassis 09.
Now that most of the paint has been stripped off the bare chassis is visible. Although there was some initial concern raised by some apparent repair work to the paint the carbon substrate seems to be in perfect condition.
One of these was damaged during disassembly. Will need replacing. Patrick, please could you draw and arrange manufacture? Thank you.
These are photos of the lower front wishbones mounts bolted to the chassis. These parts are rarely removed during the cars active life. We are rather glad we had them cracktested.
The engine oil and gearbox oil heat exchangers have now been pressure tested and re-conditioned. They will now stay bunged until they are refitted to the car.
We've had to re-manufacture some parts for the PC-23 including the little press fit pins that secure the dampers and anti roll bar drop links to the rockers.
